How to Get the Most Scent from Your Wax Melts

There is nothing quite like walking into a room that smells incredible. If you have ever wondered why your wax melts smell amazing in one room but barely noticeable in another, or why some melts seem to fade faster than others, you are in the right place.

After years of making highly scented soy wax melts, we have picked up a few things about getting the best possible scent throw. Here is everything you need to know.

Use the right wax burner

Not all wax burners are created equal. The dish size and the distance between the flame and the wax make a real difference to how your melt performs.

A burner with a shallow, wide dish releases scent faster and works brilliantly for larger rooms. A deeper dish gives a slower, more sustained release, which is better for smaller spaces. If you find your scent fades quickly, your dish may be running too hot.

The height of your tealight flame also matters. If the flame sits too close to the dish, the wax overheats and the fragrance burns off quickly, giving you a shorter, weaker scent. Too far away and the wax may not melt fully, meaning the fragrance never properly releases. It is worth checking the distance between the top of the flame and the bottom of the dish above it — too little or too much gap and your melt will not perform at its best.

Always use an unscented tealight. Scented tealights compete with your wax melt and muddy the fragrance. Standard four-hour unscented tealights are ideal.

Use the right amount of wax

More is not always better. One or two segments of a clamshell bar, or one wax melt pot, is plenty for most rooms. Overloading the dish does not make the scent stronger, it just wastes your wax and can cause the scent to burn off too quickly.

Start with a small amount and see how the fragrance fills the room. You can always add more next time.

Think about room size

Wax melts work harder in smaller, enclosed spaces. A hallway, bedroom or bathroom will fill with fragrance quickly and hold it beautifully.

In larger open-plan rooms, you may want to use more wax, run two burners, or choose a particularly strong scent. Our laundry and fruity scents tend to have the best throw in bigger spaces.

Placement matters

Where you put your burner affects how far the scent travels. Placing it in a doorway or near a vent helps the fragrance circulate around the room naturally.

Avoid putting your burner directly under a shelf or in a confined corner, as this traps the scent rather than letting it move through the space.

Clean your burner between scents

Leftover wax from a previous melt can dull the scent of your new one. When the wax has cooled and solidified, pop it out of the dish, wipe the dish clean with a piece of cotton wool or kitchen roll, and you are ready to start fresh.

Switching scents without cleaning your burner is a bit like brewing a new cup of tea in an unwashed mug. The old scent lingers and changes the new one.

Store your wax melts properly

Heat and direct sunlight are the enemies of a good wax melt. Keep your melts somewhere cool and dark, away from windowsills and radiators. Proper storage preserves both the fragrance and the colour of your melts for much longer.

Some scents are naturally stronger than others

This is something we are always honest about. Laundry scents and fruity scents tend to have a big, room-filling throw. Perfume-inspired scents, by their nature, are more delicate and nuanced, just like the original fragrances they are inspired by.

If you want to fill a large room fast, our Fresh and Laundry collection is where to start. If you want something more subtle and personal, our Relaxing and Spa collection and Perfume and Aftershave range are worth exploring — these scents are more delicate by nature, just like the original fragrances they are inspired by.

A final thought

The best wax melt experience comes from finding the right scent for the right space. A fragrance that feels underwhelming in a large kitchen might be perfect in a bedroom. It is worth experimenting until you find your combinations.

If you ever have questions about which of our scents might work best for a particular room or occasion, we are always happy to help. Just drop us a message.

We hope this helps you get every last bit of fragrance from your melts.
